Craig M. Chavis Jr. recently led a workshop for Haven Collective members to help them escape the hustle and extinguish entrepreneurial burnout. During that event, there was a lot of discussion around shifting our mindsets to break the hustle cycle that’s causing our burnout. Keep reading for a snippet of that discussion.

How do you know if you’re in a hustle mindset? Ask yourself this: Am I feeling disorganized, frustrated, overworked, or underpaid in the business I’ve built for myself? If the answer is yes, it’s likely you’re hustling. And you’re on a quick path to burnout.

Hustling has become accepted in our culture as normal, desirable, and often a badge of honor, but it’s also the main reason why entrepreneurs feel burnt out and eventually lose their business. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Myth: You have to work hard, hustle, put in long hours, and have multiple streams of income to be successful.

Truth: The most successful entrepreneurs are not burnt out. They actually work less, because they have systems in place that allow them to escape the hustle and avoid burnout.

You can create a business that works for you with these 3 guiding principles.

3 Guiding Principles

  1. You are a business owner first. This shifts you into the mindset of an executive first instead of the thing you do. (Think: I’m a business owner that happens to be a chef/coach/website designer.) This mindset is more proactive than reactionary and will be critical for the following guiding principles.

  2. Strategy creates a marketable business. When you’re stuck in the hustle you believe that all you need to do is to get exposure, advertise, and get in front of more people. But, marketing is only an amplifier. You need to start by launching something that people want (research) then use strategy to build your business with systems to automate and stay organized. Only once you’ve strategically built your business can marketing help you grow.

  3. Time is gold and money is silver. When we talk about business, everyone is obsessed with making money. It’s not about how much you make, it’s more important about how you make it. Because, by spending all your time hustling, you become a prisoner to what you’ve created. Slow down and focus on creating systems that enable to you make money more efficiently and effectively so you stop exchanging all your time and energy for money and burning out.

In Summary

By taking the time to shift your mindset, create systems, and focus on how you want to spend your time, you’ll be creating a business that doesn’t burn you out through hustling. You’ll be taking back control of your time and making money more effectively.
